Hi everyone,
A resume only gets you in the door. The interview gets you the job.
I see a lot of people stress over the perfect resume, and for good reason. If your resume is bad, you won’t get a call back. But a resume sent with no connection behind it has limited effect. You can submit 100 of them and not get a single interview. If perfecting yours takes time away from networking, following up, and practicing for interviews, it isn’t worth it.
So what do you do?
Take one week and build a base resume. Put everything in it: every experience and every outcome you can claim from your life. It’s a record for you, not the version anyone else sees. When you apply for a job, you edit the base down to fit that role. Make your claim about what you can do for that employer, then use your experiences to back it up. That’s the story from Week 1, applied.
We’ll also look at Simon Sinek’s The Origin of Why. Employers hire based on what they believe you can contribute, so your resume should say what you can contribute, not just list what you’ve done.
Then we’ll turn to LinkedIn. Aim your profile at the audience you want to reach, and make sure it matches your resume.
