Hi everyone,
I hate the question “Tell me about your day.”
I live my day. I don’t think about how to describe it, so when someone asks, they’re asking me to do work. And my answer is generic: I prospect, I work on opportunities, I talk to people. That’s not what excites me about my job. I get excited about partnering with people to come up with solutions. Prospecting is the background for it.
A better question is “Can you tell me about an opportunity you recently worked on?” That one gets a story.
The hard part is knowing what to ask. AI can help, and this week’s session walks through an exercise to find questions worth asking. Be curious. A real question starts a conversation, and it comes from something that doesn’t make sense to you. Skip anything you can find out on your own. Every conversation is a chance to learn.
While you’re being curious, pay attention to how people match their job to their purpose and how they got there. The ideal job is something you’re good at, that you can get paid for, that the world needs, and that you love doing. This is called Ikigai. Typically a first job only covers the part you get paid for. A career is how people move toward the rest, so ask them how they moved.
We’ll also watch a few LinkedIn Learning videos on connecting with hiring managers, so you know how to reach the people you’re learning from.
